Firstly, I am multi-racial/multi-ethnic, and identify with all of my racial and ethnic backgrounds, so I have no agenda, other than a human one. I do question some people's zero-sum perspective on the immigration issue, however. Immigrants, of any/every race or color, have always added to both the economy (more than they take) and the social fabric of our nation. I don't think being American born people of color excuses xenophobic mentality. Nor does being a person of color immigrant excuse the racism sometimes brought over from homelands. In the end, both the blame and the solution lies with those who own the means of production and the power to hire and fire. I am certain there's room for all of us at the table, if the privileged are willing set at few more seats.

I'm just a nosy Canuck WASP who haunts U.S. political blogs, so feel free to consider the source ( naive ? ) but I like those who hang around Ezra Klein's home site http://ezraklein.typepad.com for their earnest appreciation of Ezra's "wonkery" and open minds. Ezra also writes for the American Prospect and keeps discussions going on both blogs. Feel free to jump in with both feet.

Snackish: Thanks for disclosing. Yours is just one story. Can you imagine how many more people have been harmed in this way; how often this is happening? From binderies to newsrooms to boardrooms. What you write is worthy of a book. I hope others will share more.

I never would have believed this had I not seen it in action. I worked at a printshop in a primarily white community. We occasionally needed fill-in bindery workers and one time when we were busy, I asked my Black roommate to come help out. She was over there working away and chatting with another worker. The owner got up from his desk, walked over and told her to leave because she was being disruptive.

The man had a horrible temper and I just chalked it up to one of his moods. About a year later we needed a pressman and one of the pressroom managers invited a friend, a young Black man, to come in and work. We hired inexperienced people all the time. Halfway through the first day, the owner came in, saw the young man and after about an hour told the pressroom manager to let him go, he was working too slowly.

I didn't even put two and two together until after I quit and the owner started buying from another friend of mine, who said the owner was constantly making racist comments.

It pisses me off to know I gave that man 4 years of my life.
