WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes is the first professional women's sports star to let the world know publicly that she's a lesbian. It's her business. It's her life. I'm happy for her. Zuna Institute has a press release quoting Swoopes' interview with The Magazine in which she said, “It’s not something that I want to throw in people’s faces. I’m just at a point in my life where I’m tired of having to pretend to be somebody I’m not. I’m tired of having to hide my feelings about the person I care about. About the person I love.” It's a heck of a thing going around for years that turn into decades allowing people to assume you're someone other than who you really are. Zuna Institute is giving its support to Sheryl and other women like her: "The Zuna family is proud of Sheryl Swoopes for her bravery and honesty. Sheryl's attendance at the 2005 National Black Lesbian Conference this past April in Dallas, Texas provided a safe space where she was able to surround herself with spiritual and emotional support. We know how difficult it is to share with family and friends that you are a lesbian. The conference was a pinnacle moment for her, and helped facilitate making the decision to come out." The website also explains Zuna is a "... not for profit national advocacy organization for Black Lesbians. ... Zuna institute will focus on eliminating barriers that black lesbian[s] face within the black community based on sexual orientation and in the LGBT community based on race. [emphasis added] Zuna Institute will also host a bi-annual national conference where black lesbians come together to address the issues of our communities and organizations." God bless you, Sheryl Swoopes... and for sure I'll think about buying those sports shoes or any other useful item with your name on it.
