Don't Shoot

OK, gender refers to the grammatical categories of “masculine”, “feminine”, and “neuter”. There are no neuter people. Sex is the difference between a man and a woman, despite any PC attempt to sanitize the language.

Kim Pearson

Hi Marian,
Glad you picked up on this. I have been teaching this text for years now and I ALWAYS focus on this chapter, as well as his writings on gender. There was a C-SPAN discussion of the chapter that was archived online at one point -- I've used that in class as well. I think it is a vitally important chapter, although some make an effort to dismiss it as being emblematic of the thinking of the early 19th century. But I think there is a real parallel between what deT is saying and contemporary arguments by George Will. Important stuff.
