Vincent Maher at South Africa's Rhodes University's New Media Lab writes on "a critical media studies approach to the blogosphere."
This paper is the beginning of an exploration into the impact new media has for media studies, especially those based in the traditions of Marxism, Critical Theory or Cultural Studies. - V. Maher
I was trying to comprehend why, at a South African university in 2006, photos at New Media Lab's website appear so thoroughly white. Oversight perhaps?
And it's Earth Day 2006. Environmentalism and media. Katrina, the US Gulf Coast, and a current New Orleans mayoral race even as several hundred thousand citizen-exiles are still living away from their city. And global warming. More on these later.
It is not an oversight, the university is an equal-opportunity employer but there were no qualified candidates who weren't white. From my experience as a South African, the social and education legacy of apartheid will take a lot longet than 12 years to correct.
