We've been checking Jonathan Weisman's article in yesterday's Washington Post (Wed, 28 June), plus other related items. Weisman's article is about those 750 signing statements Bush and his White House have attached to scores of U.S. laws which de facto directly counter the laws' meaning and intent. All of this seems wild. Or maybe not. Consider questions about Mr. Bush's early attitudes toward and alleged "encounters" with U.S. law - beginning with the stories down in Texas of drug allegations and allegedly expunged court records. Did George Bush once actually do court-mandated "community service" at a Black community center in Houston? Maybe that's a rumour. What is the truth? What Americans and indeed the world are now going through no longer is just about one individual. At the national and international level where does all this lead? And when will it end?
